Abstract: This study examines the relationship between practices of environmental protection and company performance for the electricity industry in China. We find that corporate performance is negatively related to pollutant emission reductions. The negative influence is persistent beyond the current year, as the one-yearlagged emission reductions are also related to current-year corporate performance. Further investigation shows that the negative relationship is more pronounced for firms located in the "Dual Control Zones." Relative to unlisted firms, the negative relationship is stronger for listed firms. This study also assesses the impact of other environmental policies and practices. In particular, we find that the price subsidy policy is beneficial to non state-owned corporations, but not to state-owned enterprises, although the subsidy policy as a whole is not significant for the whole sample. We next examine the effect of corporate expenditure on pollutants emission reductions. We find higher expenditure is generally related to better corporate performance. Finally, there is no evidence to suggest that the environmental protection fund has any significant effect on corporate performance.
