dcterms.abstractIn this study. active confined force was built up by pre-tensioning the steel bolt (with a diameter of 16mm) to pre-defined tensile strain. The active confined stress was then distributed through the steel plates to concrete. All specimens were tested by a MTS system controlled loading machine. Loading was increased until reaching a peak value and allowed to decrease in the post-peak region. In addition, axial displacement was measured by the LVDT attached to the lower platens. And lateral strain was measured by strain gauges fixed on the prc-stressed steel bolts (assuming lateral strain of concrete is equal to that of the steel bolts), By averaging experimental values of all specimens, it can be seen that the confined concrete shows enhancement in load carrying capacity. Besides, the higher the levels of pre-stressed strain of steel bolts give the largest improvement in compressive strength. The average compressive strength enhancement in sets A and B are respectively 10.20% and 9.81% for pre-stressed level of 0.001 in strain and 14.13% and 16.72% for pre-stressed level of 0.002 in strain.en_US
