Abstract: | The assumption of rigid cap was frequently made for the foundations of buildings. In fact, a pile cap has a certain extent of flexibility and pile load would be different from those based on the aforesaid assumption. At present no satisfactory convention factor exists or a few fields data to quantify the mentioned phenomena. This paper used a Building Department approved computer program: Calculations of pile & pile-cap (Conventional Rigid Cap analysis) and a developed computer program: SAP 2000 (Rigorous analysis) to study the behavior of pile cap deformations and pile loads for a typical Housing Harmony Building using bored piles and H-piles foundations. These studied parameters include: (a) Different thickness of caps (b) Different stiffness of super-structural beams (c) Different number of storey of super-structural frame, and (d) Different construction stages. It was found that, (a) The maximum differential deformation of cap would be 1/2566 for 3.0m depths of caps with bored pile foundations and 1/2866 for 2.0m depths of caps with H-pile foundations respectively. When considered wind effect, those changes to 1/1562 & 1/1386. Whatsoever, these were smaller than the 1/300 factor, which are the requirements of design codes used in Hong Kong. (b) When the depth of a typical cap is over 3.0m for bored pile foundations or 2.0m for H-pile foundations, the maximum discrepancies of pile loads between conventional & rigorous analytical approaches were 26% and 27% respectively. On the other hand, when the stiffening effect of the superstructure was considered, the said discrepancies became 18% and 23%. In fact, the non-structural walls (partitions and other external walls) would further increases the stiffness of these caps, so that the discrepancies of pile loads determined between conventional rigid cap analysis & rigorous analysis approaches would also be reduced. Consequently, the conventional rigid caps analytical method to determinate pile load is petrified for the practical range of cap thickness adopted in the typical Housing Harmony Building foundations. |
