Surface bidirectional reflectance and albedo properties derived with MODIS and AERONET observations and global albedo mappingen_US
Deriving accurate surface albedo properties and products is of great significance in applications of remote sensing on both land surface and atmosphere. Surface bidirectional distribution function (BRDF) and global albedo maps are derived using MODIS and global AERONET combination observations. Instead of traditional pixel-based approach, an object-oriented approach is employed using clear-sky reflectance data for same land-cover with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) also taken into account. The BRDF parameters was modeled via the inversion fitting of observations grouped into small bins according to observation parameters including SZA (solar zenith angle), VZA (viewing zenith angle) and RAA (relative azimuth angle). Observations were further grouped according to NDVI to discriminate different bio-physical status of vegetation. A robust statistical processing was used to every group to reduce outliers and influence of noise. Inter-comparison was carried out between modeled BRDF parameters and albedo and available albedo products. A good agreement was generally reached globally using land cover-based approach between model-calculated albedo and observed albedo. Finally, a global albedo map was produced using the approach put forward based on global land cover base map.en_US
