Language use and language proficiency : a study of a mixed group of F.6 students in Anglo-Chinese schools and its implications for the teaching and learning of English in Hong Kongen_US
Considerable research evidence has indicated that the more second language learners use or practise using the target language, the more proficient they are likely to become in it. The present study is an attempt to examine a group of Hong Kong students' use of English outside the English classroom and the relationship between such use and their English language proficiency as reflected by their attainment in the HKCEE English Examination (Syl. B), 1994. The subjects under study were 300 F. 6 students from eight Anglo-Chinese secondary school who had just taken the HKCEE English Examination (Syl. B), 1994. For the survey, a questionnaire was designed to find out the frequency of their use of English outside the English class and the SPSS programme was used for statistic purpose. Findings of the study indicate that there is a positive correlation between the use of English other than the English lessons and the level of proficiency as reflected by the grades attained in the public examination. In order to have a better understanding of the language use of the students under study, in addition to the main study, the researcher had also conducted 15 case studies in which the subjects were asked to keep diaries. Telephone interviews were also held when they were deemed necessary. Findings of the case studies further confirm the positive relationship between the English use outside the English class and English proficiency.en_US
