Abstract: | The dissertation gives a brief introduction to the working principle of semiconductor lasers, FPGA system development, PID control theory and algorithm. Temperature influence on the performance of semiconductor lasers is discussed highlighting the important practical significance of developing a highly stable and low cost semiconductor laser temperature control system. The dissertation establishes the framework of using FPGA for implementing a semiconductor laser temperature control system using digital PID algorithm. The technical advantages and cost advantages of this system design are discussed. The dissertation analyzes the technical importance and difficulties in designing and implementing such semiconductor laser temperature control system. The dissertation gives the description of the software design procedure and hardware structure development. Digital implementation of traditional PID theory is discussed. Finally, through system functional simulation, code synthesizing, translating, mapping, place and routing and generation of programming file, the dissertation verifies the system design. Xilinx's Spartan 3 FPGA development board was used for implementing the designed system. In addition, the limitation of the system design and suggestions for future system performance improvement are discussed. |
