The effect of ammonia on the formation of indoor secondary organic aerosols from the ozonolysis of air freshener emissionsen_US
Many physical parameters such as air exchange rate (ACH), temperature (T), relative humidity (RH) and chemical parameters like hydroxyl radical (OH), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO₂) or ammonia (NH₃) can affect the Secondary Organic Aerosols (SOA)'s formation from ozone and biogenic organic volatile compounds (BVOCs) emitted from air fresheners(AF). In this study, I selected NH₃ as the impact parameter; investigate the ozonolysis of BVOCs in the chamber reaction and the by-products of carbonyl. In this paper, I reviewed the reaction mechanism of the ozone and BVOC; and the primary constitution of AF. Use scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) to monitor the number and distribution of the particles, and the concentration of NH₃ and O₃. The target AF contains four kinds of BVOCs, namely p-Cymene, d-Limonene, Linalool and α-Terpineol react with ozone in the presence or absence of NH₃. Analyses the formation and growth of SOA, discussed the variation of diameters of particles' geometric mean, and concluded that ammonia facilitates the reaction. Compared the particles' formation figures, only the peak of the concentration curve moved, the values don't change a lot; hence NH₃ is not act as a catalyst. Introduced the methods of carbonyl sampling. At last, provided the recommendations of how to select proper control method over indoor SOA formations in real indoor environments.en_US
