Abstract: As economic development and technological innovations speed up, social and urban construction is developing very fast as well. Although traditional architecture has met a great number of people's living needs, it has brought numerous detrimental effects on sustainable development. Therefore, green design has been gradually recognized and accepted. Due to the uneven economic development level in different cities, the application of green design varies from city to city. Many green technologies can be used in large-sized cities, but not all of them can be used in medium-sized cities. In my research, I set four major goals, including: 1) to analyze the green building constructed in the medium-sized cities and to understand what green design methods have been adopted; 2) to interview the real estate developers, designers, consumers and governmental officials in the medium-sized city so as to understand different group's attitude on the application of green design in medium-sized cities; 3) to adopt a survey of consumers understand, in the medium-sized city, people's consumption capacity, as well as acceptance of the application of green design; 4) to search for strategies and analyze which green design methods could be practiced in the medium-sized cities. Through the comprehensive literature review, I have learnt the knowledge of green design both in China and abroad. By analyzing the cases referring to applications of green design in foreign countries, I aim to understand how to adopt green design and what methods could be used in green design. After a comprehensive understanding of this knowledge, I have analyzed four cases of four cities: Zhuhai, Nanning, Shaoxing and Xi'an, which are all medium-sized cities. Then I did an interview in Shaoxing. I found the developers and consumers in medium-sized cities have a passion for green design. However various conditions lead to green design in the medium-sized cities can only be designed in the high-end residential house, while the high technology and green design are not suited for the normal house. But appropriate technology of green design methods can be widely used and recognized. In order to verify this conclusion, I took a survey for the public in Shaoxing, 200 questionnaires were collected, verified by data analysis from my visit in the conclusion. Finally, I give some strategies when applying green design in the medium-sized cities.
