Annual energy consumption comparison between variable air volume system and liquid desiccant based air conditioning systemen_US
Energy consumption has become a concerned issue in the air-conditioning system related studies. In the novel liquid desiccant based air-conditioning system, the temperature and humidity of process air can be controlled independently, which is different from the conventional system and has great energy saving potential. In this study, by simulation on the platforms of EnergyPlus and TRNSYS, the energy performance of the liquid desiccant based air-conditioning system is compared with that of the variable air volume air-conditioning system. Firstly, the air handling load for a typical floor in a building in Hong Kong was abtained by simulation. Then, to remove the load, two types of air-conditioning system, including the variable air volume air-conditioning system and the liquid desiccant based air-conditioning system, were adopted and simulated respectively. Based on the meteorological data of Hong Kong, the performance of the variable air volume system was simulated on the platform of EnergyPlus, while the liquid desiccant based system was simulated on TRNSYS. Finally, the energy consumption of the two systems were compared month by month in a whole-year. In addition, the initial cost of the liquid desiccant based system was investigated. The simulation results show that the liquid desiccant based air-conditioning system is more energy-efficient. Moreover, the energy performance of the liquid desiccant based system is better in summer throughout the whole year. In July, the energy consumption could he saved by 19.70% compared with the variable air volume system. The comparison on energy consumption between the liquid desiccant based system and the variable air volume system reveals that, the energy-saving potential of the liquid desiccant based system in the humid areas, just like Hong Kong, is enormous. However, the initial cost of the liquid desiccant based air-conditioning system is larger than that of other air-conditioning systems, which may be the main barrier to its wide application. Thus, the running cost and the payback period of the initial cost is an important issue. The selection of the heat resource has great influence on the energy consumption and running cost.en_US
