Abstract: The overall indoor environmental quality (IEQ) is evaluated from the prospect of an occupant's acceptance in four aspects, including thermal comfort, indoor air quality, noise level and illumination level, which were separately addressed in previous investigations of IEQ in classrooms. This study attempted to obtain a general overview of the indoor environmental quality in air-conditioned classrooms in Hong Kong and propose an index for evaluating the IEQ with the integration of four parameters. Both objective physical measurement and subjective assessment with questionnaire were performed in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Total 17 classrooms were chosen for examples and 457 copies of questionnaires were collected. In this survey, 95.6% of occupants were acceptable to the measured indoor environmental quality. For thermal environment, indoor air quality, visual and aural environment, the acceptance percentage was 89.3%, 86.7%, 94.9% and 97.4% respectively. The rank of the significance of these four parameters is therr environment. indoor air quality, illuminance level and aural environment. And overall acceptance level of IEQ is expressed by a multivariate logistic regression model. This study provided a general overview of the indoor environmental quality in air-conditioned classrooms in Hong Kong and the proposed overall IEQ evaluation index can be used as an available assessment reference for an air-conditioned classroom and similar environment where an occupant's evaluation is expected.
