Application of BOTDA technology for measurement of the performance of bored pilesen_US
Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) is considered as an efficient health monitoring technique for geotechnical structures. In this project, a series of experiments include laboratory calibration tests for BOTDA measurement of strain, tempetature and location. In addition, a field application of the BOTDA fibre installation into bored piles, and long-tenn strain variation measurements are conducted. BOTDA sensing technology is used for measuring the average strain distribution along the bored piles. The strain results are used for assessing the effectiveness of the BOTDA technique in average strain measurement and the performance of the bored piles. According to the series of test results, the following conclusions can be drawn: (i) strain results measured using the BOTDA technology agree well with the vibrating wire strain gauges (VWSGs) results; (ii) the BOTDA technology can be used to measure the strain variation along the bore piles to reflect the inside change of bore piles and (iii) the calculated average strain variation and pure strain changes of BOTDA sensor results can be used to monitor the axial forces and bending moment along bore piles. The performance of the bored piles is obtained and is considered safe up to the present of measurement. Typical observations and measurements are presented, discussed in this thesis.en_US
