dcterms.abstract | Rapid rail transit systems (RRTs), served as one of the most energy efficient mass transportation means, has drawn more attention when planners and designers trying to cope with problems in many modern cities which suffers from severe traffic congestion and pollution. Traditionally, average performance of some well-known RRTs, like ones in New York City, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong etc., were introduced as the benchmark to plan the new projects or evaluate existing ones. In reality, however, there have been about 180 RRTs in the world and most of which are located in cities with less population and economic activities. It is critical to establish an evaluation system which based on the performance of all RRTs in the world as a benchmark to guide development of RRTs. Little research has been conducted on the global scale. This project does a comprehensive analysis on all RRTs around the world and gives more insight on the relationships between some key variables such as population of city (POP), length of RRTs system (LEN) and annual ridership of RRTs (RID) which represent the potential and actual productivity of RRTs, together with the ratio of fare to GDP of city (FAR/GDP) which represents the cost of RRTs, from the perspective of passengers. From statistical analysis, 37.7 to 40.5 km network per million people was provided in each city; about 4.96 million passengers per kilometer of network can be expected; and about 187 to 201 times per citizen would take RRTs in one year have been found as the benchmark of productivity. In terms of fare, the ratio of cost of travelling 10-station distance 10,000 times to city per capita GDP is 5.78 on average. In addition, 470m is adopted as the radius of catchment area globally. And the efficiency of individual RRTs is evaluated and revealed in a visual identity system which is friendly to common people.
