dcterms.abstractDuring the 1990s, a major transformation in the electricity industry took place in many countries. Under restructuring and deregulation, competition was introduced towards the wholesale electricity market and retail electricity market. Different structures and features of electricity markets emerge in different countries, and nowadays, Australian electricity market becomes one of the most efficient and sophisticated markets in the world. As a result, this thesis simulates an electricity market of Queensland with a simulation tool, Matlab, on the basis of the Australian electricity market and generation information provided by AEMO's website. In tbe Matlab, another simulation package is used, MATPOWER, an open-source Matlab power system simulation package, which is used to solve power flow problems and optimal power problems under the Matlab platform. And then, the program for market simulation is completed and run by Matlab. The smartmarket of MATPOWER, a code that implements a "smart market" auction clearing mechanism based on MATPOWER's optimal power flow solver, is fully used to determine load allocations and prices so that the smooth operation and management can be implemented in the electricity market.en_US
