dc.title | Identification of emerging trends and issues in low cost carriers industry in Asia Pacific | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The Asia Pacific region in recent years has seen a remarkable growth of low cost carriers (LCCs). Both industry trade media and popular media have covered the rapid growth of LCCs in the region. In light of this significant growth of LCCs in the region and its potential implications for development of tourism and hospitality industry, it was deemed very important to examine the developing trends relative to LCCs and their implications. This dissertation research has been conducted in an attempt to fill this gap by undertaking a comprehensive research to identify the trends shaping the LCCs industry in Asia Pacific. This research has been conducted with an objective to fulfill three specific research questions: (1) what are the major issues relating to recent development of LCCs in Asia Pacific?; (2) what are the major trends in airline and travel industry associated with development of LCCs in Asia Pacific?; and (3) what are the strategic and managerial implications of the development of LCCs in Asia Pacific? Eight dominant trends relative to LCCs in Asia and Pacific were identified. The eight trends, in order of significance, were: (1) route expansions by LCCs; (2) changing economics of LCCs; (3) fleet expansions; (4) government and inter-government regulations affecting LCCs; (5) changes in operational modes; (6) safety issues in LCCs; (7) new entrants in LCCs market; and (8) airport support for LCCs. Each of these trends was discussed with presentation of a summary table derived from the data analysis. Implications of the eight trends relative to LCC development in Asia Pacific are discussed with particular reference to economic, political/legal, technological and socio-cultural issues associated with the LCC development. | en_US |
