| dcterms.abstract | The conventions and meetings industry has already been one of the most important segments in tourism industry for decades. Since organizing meetings and conventions produces potential tourism imports that contribute significant economic benefits to the destination, lots of tourism authorities throughout the world are keen to attract convention visitors to their destinations. In order to provide insights for marketers to further understand and better manage convention industry in Shanghai, this study assessed the performance of Shanghai as an international convention destination as perceived by both meeting planners and meeting attendees. Qualitative content analysis was conducted to evaluate the results from in-depth interviews with meeting planners, meanwhile, Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) was applied to analyze the questionnaire results from meeting attendees, later, the comparison between two groups was analyzed. The findings of this research pointed out that Shanghai effectively met the preferences of both meeting planners and attendees in highly important areas such as security & safety of the destination, ease of access, qualty of meeting facilities and hotel rooms, however, the city still needs to improve weaknesses relate to below aspects: firstly, Shanghai lacks meeting talents so that the meeting service quality is influenced to be in low performance; secondly, Shanghai performs low in terms of language skills; thirdly, the ground transportation system does not work well in Shanghai; finally, develop more meeting venues that can accommodate more than 1000 attendees, as well as build more hotels to make sure the hotel capacity is large enough in high demand season are both important for Shanghai to further develop convention industry in the future. | en_US |
