dcterms.abstract | Job stress is a common issue within every hotel industry due to its people oriented characteristic, but not every organisation pays attention to it. A severe challenge for today's hotel business is the growing staff turnover rate. Study of employees' organisational commitment is therefore of utmost importance in retaining talents. Base on these concerns, this research study aims to investigate the relationship between employee job stress and organisational commitment in Hong Kong hotel industry. Qualitative interviews and quantitative survey questionnaires have been adopted In terms of methodology. In total, a number of 19 hotel employees have participated in interviews and a number 185 hotel staff from 14 hotels ranging from High Tariff A hotels, High Tariff B hotels to Medium Tariff hotels have responded to survey questionnaires in Hong Kong. Research results identified 10 factors in regards to hotel employee job stress: 1) work and workplace characteristics; 2) work nature; 3) organisation culture; 4) quality of time; 5) individual personality; 6) organisational involvement; 7) interpersonal communication; 8) physical relief; 9) emotional relief and 10) ignorance. Among these factors, work nature was found to be the most influential factor in affecting hotel employees' commitment to an organisation by using Principal Component Analysis with Rotated Component Matrix method. Then, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA have been conducted to test mean differences among different group of respondents. Finally, recommendations were made to hotel management as followings: a) Organisations should involve in helping employees to cope with job stress by listening to their needs in handling job stress; b) hotel managers should consider giving employees more autonomy in carrying out their job duties; c) hotel managers should provide staff with clear job specifications to increase organisational commitment; d) hotel management should consider invest both time and money on employee job stress research. | en_US |
