Abstract: As very important portion in the project management domain, risk management standard has been well defined by several institutes or similar organizations. The area covered financial market, project failures (at any phase in design, development, production, or sustainment life-cycles), legal liabilities, credit risk, accidents, natural causes and disasters as well as deliberate attack from an adversary, or events of uncertain or unpredictable cause. Chinese IT outsourcing companies also need risk management on the top view by following standards. Except this, their major business is in the shape of delivery, and it is an independent area, the management will monitor and control project more closely and frequently than the areas which applicable for risk management. In this dissertation, we will try to develop an effective pattern for Chinese outsourcing company based on analysis of current status of classic outsourcing companies of different size. The source material consists of risk management framework of companies and major risk management methods and theories which were considered to be adaptable for IT outsourcing companies. Besides an analysis of related work, this review provides an overview of applied research methods and theories in the field of IT Outsourcing. The dissertation then analyzed from a risk management point of view to highlight risk management tools and their applicability on IT Outsourcing. Identified risk tools are further analyzed in order to resolve risk management area of a typical IT Outsourcing process (life-cycle). The results of the review show that empirical research is the most applied method and that action research and reference modelling have not been used at all so far. Furthermore, elements of a research agenda are discussed in order to determine further steps to the construction of a reference model for risk management in IT Outsourcing. This dissertation mainly aims at an audience of experienced researchers in the field of IT Outsourcing who are looking for research ideas.
