dcterms.abstractThis study employs a thematic content analysis to identify the feelings of six nurse participants through six designated art workshops. As a registered nurse who has been working in an acute medical ward for more than eight years and has training in art therapy, she is able to understand the nurses' feelings through participant observations. Unstructured interviews were used for gathering the data in group art workshops. The raw data were transcribed and analyzed thematically to ascertain the expressive outlets for the participants' thoughts and feelings, their images of stress with group feedback and exploration of their coping strategies. These findings identified the common types of stressors that nurses encountered include financial and family burdens; no time to relax, enjoy life or have some leisure activities; tremendous workload; dealing with large group of people such as patients and their families; and gain no support from ward manager when there are complaints or medical incidents. For the coping strategies, they could be categorized into three types, namely acceptance, withdrawal and avoidance. Among the six participants, half of them used a coping strategy of acceptance to face their stressors in a more positive way while the others used strategies of withdrawal and avoidance. Furthermore, it was observed that art works of comforting environment were usually created as a way to project their feelings, desires and wishes.en_US
