Abstract: The aging population is increasing in Hong Kong and the proportion of people aged 65 or above is predicted to be rise rapidly. Therefore the demand of elderly house will be greatly increased. Elders with certain level of disability need additional assistant and time to evacuate in emergency situation. This study focuses on the fire evacuation condition in the Care and Attention Homes for elders with low level of disability. Local mandatory requirements on the design of elder house and relevant fire safety standard have been studied to help to analyze the evacuation performance of elderly home. Field study was conducted in a Care and Attention Home and the evacuation characteristics of elders were observed. Data were obtained in evacuation behavior tests and it was used as reliable input in the computer simulation. The elders with disabilities are found to be deficient in escape. Due to the safety consideration the evacuation process was not perform and it was done by computer simulation. Fire Dynamics Simulator with Evacuation (FDS+Evac) was used to simulate the whole evacuation process. Different scenarios were established and the results show how the configuration of elderly home, characteristics of people and the fire management plan affects the evacuation performance. Evacuation simulation is a useful way to evaluate the evacuation performance in the design stage and should be performed during design stage.
