| dcterms.abstract | There is a general consensus that today's business is facing knowledge-based competition. To compete successfully, a firm has to develop its core capabilities and generate innovations to distinguish itself from the competitors. A firm can achieve this either through in-house research and development, or by obtaining the required technologies from some third parties such as universities and other technology allies. Since 1990, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has been operating the Teaching Company Scheme (TCS), which is an academic-industrial collaboration in industry-guided research aiming at increased utilization of academic R&D resources for higher value-added industrial applications. This scheme won high acclaim from the Chief Executive's Commission on Innovation and Technology as an important way to sustain Hong Kong's economic growth and high standard of living. This project focuses on the knowledge generation and transfer processes which are covered by extensive literature on knowledge management. As most of such literature originates in the West, this project seeks to contribute to the literature by presenting a contextual study in Hong Kong with particular reference to the TCS. Relevant previous research and publications on knowledge management are cited as a foundation for this study. To substantiate the study, both quantitative and qualitative approaches in the forms of questionnaire survey and case study respectively are used. In a nutshell, this project has met its objectives in: 1) investigating the knowledge generation and transfer processes from the PolyU to the participating companies through the TCS, 2) evaluating the effectiveness of the TCS from the perspectives of the participating companies, teaching company associates and academic directors, and 3) making practical recommendations on how to further facilitate knowledge generation and transfer from academia to industry through the TCS. | en_US |
