dc.title | Study of the plugholing in smoke extraction system by fire dynamics simulator | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Smoke control system is one of the key elements in fire safety management system. The major function of the smoke control system is to prevent smoke spread and keep the smoke clearance of the Mean of Escape (MOE). The performance of the system is governed by the effectiveness of smoke exhaust. There are several factors affecting the effectiveness of the smoke extraction system like fire size and inlet geometric factors. Plugholing effect is one of the major concerns at the smoke exhaust inlet. In this study, current understanding on plugholing effect with respect to NFPA 92B was reviewed. Empirical equations were studied and the physics behind was investigated. The performance of fire field model in the design of the smoke extraction system was studied. It is important to study whether the occurrence of plugholing could be simulated. Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) was chosen in this study as it was popular among the design engineer. Simulations were performed and the results were compared to the experimental work from NRCC-42570 [4]. Results showed that the simulation output was sensitive to the mesh size and the Smagorinsky constant. The optimum parameters for the simulation were rendered. On the prevention of plugholing, simulations showed that a vent plate placed below the vent could effective suppress the surface dip and the formation of plugholing. | en_US |
