Abstract: | This dissertation reports the findings of an investigation into the International Electrotechnical Commission Standard 62305. The study was carried out in response to the clear need for avoiding confusion with different standards. The study discussed two questions which arise from the application of the new standard to the high-rise building. The first one is about the collection area and the second one is about the side-strike probability. This study applied three methods for the lightning collection area issue. For side strike probability issue, the data were collected by means of simulation software named COMSOL Reaction Engineering Lab 1.4. It was found that the statement in IEC standard about lightning collection area for the high-rise building is unsuitable. It was also found that the protection area of the high-rise structure for the side-strike issue is insufficient. Generally speaking, the IEC standard 62305 is a new standard with some inadequacies points, as evaluation in this study. |
