| dcterms.abstract | The perinatal loss of an expected baby entails maternal despair and grief. The purpose of this study was to analyze how mothers experienced losing a baby as a result of stillbirth. Grief process is very personal. Different person with different culture will handle grief differently. As Hong Kong is a multi-cultural society, this suggests the necessity of research into maternity needs of Chinese women who experience stillbirth and whether or not their needs are being fulfilled by the maternity care service in Hong Kong. In order to explore in depth the experiences of women with stillbirth and to identity their caring needs, this study employed a variety of qualitative techniques: in-depth interviews and non-participant observations in grief counseling of twelve Chinese women who had the experience of stillbirth deliveries. The study found unmet needs in three major areas: neediness of support; accessibility of information on health and services of mothers experiencing stillbirth and cultural appropriateness of care provision for mothers experiencing stillbirth. The findings of this study should have important implications for improving cultural sensitivity and appropriateness of care in managing Chinese mothers with stillbirths in Hong Kong. The development of basic and further education in nursing would enable the nursing staff to better cope with their work. Midwives focusing on interactive skills and meeting mothers' individual needs would help improving the quality of care. | en_US |
