Comparison of the organic removal of high organic wastewater with different kind of wasted bentonite by adsorptionen_US
The potential of wasted bentonite as low cost absorbents for removal of organic contaminants from wastewater was studied. Since COD removal efficiency of wasted bentonite was negative, pretreatment of heating at 600 ÂșC for 4 hours was required. Grit contained bentonite was chosen for modification and it showed low adsorption capacity in this study. Hence, grit contained bentonite was modified by sulfuric acid and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant. Most of the adsorption capacity values of 0.5M acid activated bentonite under different loading and various initial glucose concentrations are at least twice times than CTAB modified bentonite. Therefore 0.5M sulfuric acid activated bentonite was introduced to study how the operational parameters: bentonite loading, initial COD concentration could affect the adsorption capacity. The adsorption capacity increased with initial COD concentration and decrease with bentonite loading. The optimum COD range and loading of bentonite was 120mg/L to 160mg/L and 1g/L, respectively. The experimental data of adsorption by grit contained bentonite, 0.5M sulfuric acid activated bentonite, and CTAB modified bentonite were all analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models. The result showed that adsorption of glucose on grit contained bentonite was heterogeneous, while adsorption of glucose on acid activated bentonite was homogeneous. None of these three models could adequately describe the adsorption data of CTAB modified bentonite.en_US
