Possible improvement of performance of water mist fire suppression system by chemical additivesen_US
Water mist fire suppression systems (WMFSS) are advanced water-based fire suppression systems having advantages of clean agent and high efficiency. However, there might be some shortcomings in applying these systems in certain fire scenarios. Employing water additives for such systems is a possible solution to overcome the drawbacks. In this dissertation, five water additives are reviewed first. Extinguishing mechanisms of water additives are discussed for a clearer understanding of how additives change the physical property of water and chemical reactions in flames. Because additives are used in WMFSS primarily through chemical mechanisms, corresponding chemical reactions in flames are discussed. Reviewing the types, suppression mechanisms and applications of WMFSS is necessary to reveal the factors which can affect the performance of WMFSS. WMFSS with additives are reviewed in terms of their applications to the most frequently studied fire scenarios. The performance of WMFSS for such fires can be largely improved by applying low concentration of proper water additives. Statistic analysis of the previous experimental results is carried out to explain the efficiency order of WMFSS with metal compounds. Comparison of the suppression efficiency in percentage is done to give some insight on how to properly use additives to improve the performance of WMFSS for certain fires.en_US
