Supporting genealogy data exchange with considerations of Chinese cultureen_US
In the past, genealogical information has been based on paper form. It is hard to revise and store. Hence, digital genealogy can solve this type of issues effectively. However, due to the differences between Chinese and western culture, the way of expressing genealogical information is different. It leads to a great difficulty for genealogy information sharing and interoperability. A good way to exchange genealogical data and information integration has become an interesting problem in the recent development of digital genealogy. This dissertation work tries to develop a schema to support the exchange of archival of genealogical data for different cultures. We first analyzes the characteristics of Chinese and foreign genealogy, from the aspects of the family structure, as well as the content and representation between Chinese and foreign genealogy. We find 6 common characteristics of the cultures, such as nuclear family, basic demographics data, family lineage, etc. At the same time, we discover some differences in representation and semantics of family information, such as recording content, different genealogy count, women positions in the family tree records. Based on the findings, a genealogy data model is developed for the inclusion of genealogy metadata information, genealogy basic information and genealogy spatio-temporal information. An XML schema is implemented to support the data model and allow easy data exchange.en_US
