Formal ontology for linguistic semanticsen_US
There is a long tradition of explaining features of the semantics of human languages in formal logic. There is a long tradition of doing automated computation in formal logic. These two endeavors can reinforce one another, with theorem proving being used to test and debug theories of semantics and theories of semantics used for question answering and many other computer science applications. However, two issues have prevented combining these two fields. First, is the need for a large and reusable library of theories, so that each new advance in linguistic semantics can be integrated into a coherent whole. Second, is that methods for efficient theorem proving have not been well explained, or applied on large formal logic theories. This dissertation attempts to address those two obstacles by (1) supplying the Suggested Upper Merged Ontology and showing how new formalizations of linguistic semantics can be integrated and (2) describing the basic software design and implementation of a practical theorem proving system that can be employed for reasoning over SUMO and the new theories of linguistic semantics that augment it.en_US
