Abstract: | Railway turnouts are the weakest components of the track system and have become one of the most serious reasons obstructing the speed increasing. Since the turnouts are subjected to cyclic loadings and impulse by trains, fatigue cracks occur easily. Therefore monitoring the health condition of the railway turnouts and promptly detecting the fatigue cracks at the crack initiation stage are significant. It is well known that acoustic emission signals are generated when fatigue cracks initiate and grow up. The fatigue cracks usually generate acoustic emission much higher than the normal steel rail. In this way, the frequency-domain analysis can detect the difference between the rail with and without cracks. This dissertation focuses on qualifying the difference of the signal between the rail with and without cracks based on the frequency-domain analysis and developing a series of algorithms to process the signal and distinguish the normal rail and crack rail automatically. The in-situ experiment data are also used to develop and verify the algorithms. |
