Water efficiency for residential buildings of Hong Kongen_US
Due to the limited fresh water resources and the high daily water consumption in Hong Kong, water efficiency becomes a challenging issue especially in residential buildings. In this dissertation, we study the definition of water efficiency. Water efficiency is the ratio of the minimum water consumption with existing technology and residential water consumption with different efficient technology. In order to improve the water efficiency of residential buildings, we need to study on how to improve the water efficiency for residential buildings of Hong Kong. We first investigate water consumptions for residential buildings of Hong Kong. Then, we describe the main fresh water appliances in households of Hong Kong (i.e., washing machines, shower and water taps), and illustrate the relationship between the average water consumption and the number of members in a household for each water appliance. We also introduce the Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme (WELS) in Hong Kong for each water appliance respectively. Moreover, we show the water appliances that are currently used in residential buildings of Hong Kong and associate them with water efficiency grades in WELS. Although WELS indicates the water efficiency for each water appliances, it is still a difficult problem for a household to choose the most water efficient appliances within a given budget. In order to solve this challenging issue, we formulate the Household Water Appliances Recommendation (HWAR) problem and define the metrics to calculate water consumption for different water appliances. After that, we propose two solutions for HWAR problem (Trivial Solution and Greedy Solution) and compare them in terms of advantages and disadvantages. We also implement our proposed two solutions for HWAR problem by using Q-C Figure and Greedy Method. Specifically, we first give some sampling data of water appliances for households in Hong Kong, such as Water Consumption, Durations, Frequency, and Price etc. Then, we describe our designed Household Water Appliances Recommendation Tools for both trivial solution and greedy solution. From the data, we show that by using our designed Household Water Appliances Recommendation methods and tools, customers can choose the optimal combination of water appliances that are the most water efficient within a given budget of each household. This can greatly improve the WELS scheme, save the fresh water resource, and improve the water utility for residential buildings of Hong Kong.en_US
