Use of visual arts to teach English for Design studentsen_US
Teaching English through visual arts is usually promoted in the kindergarten or elementary schools, not popular in secondary schools or colleges. In the majority of mainland colleges, the English teaching still uses the traditional textbook and grammar-oriented approach with a big class, which makes most of students lose their motivations to learn English. The study selected a design English class with 59 year-two college students from a design college as research objects and used visual arts as a tool to transform motivational strategies into teachable motivational practices aiming to motivate students to involve in learning English in the design English class. Through data analysis based on students{174} questionnaire survey, the study draws a conclusion that using visual arts to teach English is effective to motivate students to learn English from the points of raising their interests, making them easy to understand the subject matters and helping them remember more English vocabulary and expressions impressively. However, it is not effective to motivate students to participate in reading, writing and speaking activity in class. Meanwhile, some tips are summarized how to make visual arts more effective to motivate students to learn English in class, which provide pedagogical implications for language teachers.en_US
