| Abstract: | The Economist, a British weekly magazine, has a worldwide political and economical audience and an increasing sales volume when other paper publications show a declining tendency, such as Newsweek, which now is published online, only. This paper aims at analyzing a set of articles from The Economist to verify if it is a neoliberal voice and what are the discourse strategies used to convey its ideas and shape reality through language. The investigation is informed by Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST). The data is composed of a set of articles that focus on economic issues in China. Firstly, we analyze the data to identify specific text structures and clause relations that are responsible for the rhetorical patterns employed in the articles. Secondly, we review these articles and the emerged patterns identified through the RST analysis to highlight through the lenses of CDA (Fairclough, 2012; van Dijk, 2006) the magazine’s discourse and ideological ideas that are conveyed explicitly or implicitly through the articles. |
