dc.title | Applying systemic functional linguistics to Chinese poetry translation | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | This article applies Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday,2004) to Chinese-to-English poetry translation in order to find out how the Chinese poetry translation achieves "Functional Equivalence" (Nida,1964). The study based on the theory forms an overall investigation into the method of Chinese poetry translation. This article presents the findings from the analysis of 9 published translation works. The poems both in Chinese version and in English version are analyzed in terms of ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions. The investigation mainly focuses on (1) how source language presents three metafunctions and (2) how target language realizes the three metafunctions. The results indicate that Chinese-to-English poetry translation can achieve functional equivalence in various ways. The results also suggest that the findings presented in this article will assist in translating Chinese poems and the whole translation studies. | en_US |
