dcterms.abstract | Metaphor has been the topic of study for more than two thousand years. Traditional linguists regard metaphor as a figure of speech that relates with poetic imagination or rhetorical device. However, over the past few decades, cognitive linguists began to concentrate on the conceptual function of metaphor. Water is one of the most familiar and indispensible entities around human life. With the development of human’s cognitive competence, more and more properties of water are perceived to have similarities with other entities in the world. Abundant metaphors about water are created in English and Chinese. This dissertation intends to present a comparatively comprehend contrast of water metaphors between English and Chinese by employing quantitative and qualitative methods. Through analyzing the similarities and dissimilarities in the two languages, the cultural and social factors that lead to these differences are manifested. In addition, this research is also beneficial for EFL learner to lay the foundation of language and communication study in future. | en_US |
