| dcterms.abstract | The research in this dissertation explores the meaning-making of neologisms in Harry Potter series by utilizing Sinclair's (2004) model for lexical description, co-selection of five categories, which refer to collocation, colligation, semantic preference, semantic prosody and the core. The study examines the five categories of neologisms by establishing a Harry Potter specified corpus, and investigating the frequent reoccurrence of lexical choices of top ten neologisms in the corpus. The findings show that the meanings of neologisms derives from the given context, and semantic prosody plays an important role in shaping the meaning of a neologism in Harry Potter series. The interpretation of neologisms with co-selection of five categories has been proved very useful in understanding the neologisms in complicated context. | en_US |
