| Abstract: | This research explores the news representation of nationalist ideology on a political standoff between the People's Republic of China and the Philippines. It examines the relationships between news, language and nationalism. The research focuses on the standoff of the Chinese fishing boats and Navy ships with the Philippine Navy ship on the waters around the Huangyan Island or the Scarborough Shoal on April 10, 2012. Straight news and opinion-editorials on the political event is collected from the two countries' respective English national newspapers, China Daily and The Philippine Star. A Critical Discourse Analysis framework, "depth-hermeneutical", developed by Thompson is employed in the study to examine how the two distinct newspapers represent the nationalist ideology in news on the same political conflict. The findings suggest that both countries use different linguistic forms, structures and intertextual strategies to construct a positive image of self, give more power to its own side and make legitimate its participants' actions. In sharp contrast, the other nation is constructed negatively, its role in the event is represented inconsequentially and passively and the responsibility or causality of the conflict is placed on it. The positive representation of us and the negative representation of other help the understanding of the nationalist ideology in the news. |
