dc.title | Bilinguals personality switch-effect on language application | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The idea that people act, and even think, differently depending on the language they speak has been debated for years. This thesis sets out to test that language has a significant influence on personality by assessing bilinguals internal reflection through questionnaires. Five studies examined and empirically documented how language can be a factor of personality. Specifically, whether Cantonese-English bilinguals show different personalities when using different languages. If so, are the two personalities consistent with cross-cultural differences in personality. Study 1 established the specific personality differences between English speaking and Cantonese speaking monolinguals. Studies 2-5 examined Cantonese-English bilinguals located in Canada, UK, HK and US where the findings suggest that Conscientious, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism are consistent to the personality traits of the monolinguals when that of a particular language was activated. Supplementary investigation did not suggest the findings were due to atypical items or translation discrepancies. Results are discussed on the linkage between personality, language and culture. | en_US |
