dc.title | D.H. Lawrence's writing style in oudour of chrysanthemums : a linguistic study | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) was one of the leading writers in the history of modern English literature, a multitude of whose works mainly focus on exploring the changes of interpersonal relationship in a society dominated by industrialization and mechanization. "Odour of Chrysanthemums" is one of his famous short stories reflecting this focal theme. By depicting the unavailing awaiting of a miner's wife for her tardy husband, the author reveals the destructive consequences brought about by Modern Industrialization - human nature devastated and marriage relations distorted. This paper attempts to research into the short piece from a linguistic perspective, particularly focus on discussing how the author in his writing course employs specific styles to manifest the theme, display the incompatible marriage relationship between Elizabeth and her husband, and reach the ideal aesthetic effects. The study avails itself of relevant stylistic theories represented by Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short to offer a stylistic interpretation from such categories as lexical features, figures of speech, as well as cohesion and context. From this research, a more systematic and explicit understanding would be yielded of how literary texts are linguistically constructed which could give a thorough critique on literary works in the future and inform teaching and learning of reading and writing literary texts. | en_US |
