dcterms.abstractAcademic vocabulary is an essential dimension of EAP. Albeit the large amount of attention in academia, gaps in this field still exist. The present study seeks to narrow the gap in the empirical studies on academic vocabulary by exploring the proficiency of Chinese EFL undergraduate students on academic vocabulary in essay writing. This is a corpus-based study employing the assistance from software Range and Wordsmith 6.0. The study conducts both quantitative and qualitative analysis, following an integrated framework for assessing vocabulary. The findings indicate that Chinese EFL learners do not reach a satisfactory level of academic words, in terms of both quantity and quality in essay writing. Academic vocabulary is suggested to be cast more attention on by Chinese EFL learners and English language teachers in essay writing.en_US
