Abstract: This study attempts to make use of the data collect to present the analysis over the topic of relation management in expressing business requests on email communication by business professionals from Hong Kong Chinese culture and Turkish culture. With the rising trend of the trade between Hong Kong and Turkey, the email interaction between Hong Kong Chinese professionals and Turkish business professionals has become more frequent. Request is one of the common themes that appear on business email interaction when negotiating business deals. To deliver requests in a clear manner and manage relations at the same time, business professionals need to carefully select the appropriate rapport management strategies and apply so when constructing the request on email messages. The study is focused on the correlation between the variation of situations and the rapport management strategies to be used, and the how the social variables of power and distance manipulate the options of rapport management strategies to be adopted. This study adopts online Discourse Completion Test questionnaires to collect email samples and analyzes the request head act utterances in respect of examining rapport management strategies. Meanwhile, this study observes how situational and social variations would influence the options of rapport management strategies to be used in request head acts through observing the interpretation of social variables of power status and social distance between interactants by business professionals from the two cultural groups as well. With sets of the collected data sets, this study conducts a cross-cultural comparison regarding on the situational and social variables and the corresponding rapport management strategies in order to illustrate the similarities and differences in managing relations. This study hopes to contribute understanding in three respects, including (1) to learn the way Hong Kong Chinese cultural group and Turkish cultural group manage relations in business request email context; (2) to give an account of the rapport management strategies employed by the two cultural group through exploration on what possible factors that influence the relation management patterns; and (3) to improve business professionals' competency on business request email communication.
