A tabu search method for school timetabling problemen_US
In secondary school environment, timetabling is one of the hard tasks to be handled by the management. It involves different types of constraints and a lot of data. In general, the responsible teacher(s) would require to spend two or three weeks to complete the job. The tools they mostly use are some software systems run in PC. It takes about 10 minutes to produce the result in a 486 PC. However, after the generation of solution, the teacher has to adjust 20 to 30 periods manually to establish the final timetable. In view of this, the purpose of this study wants to achieve one objective : To minimize the manual work after producing the computed result (i.e. to minimize the manual adjustment of the timetable). Timetabling consists of three different phases: 1. Curricula Planning 2. Resource Allocation 3. Timetable Construction To narrow down the scope in this research, timetabling process is only confined to phase (2). This timetabling problem under study is a real case operating in a secondary school in Hong Kong. I treat it as an assignment problem in which a Triple (class, subject, teacher) is assigned to each pair (period, room). Each of this assignment bears a cost which is a summation of a series of quantified constraints. I shall apply Tabu Search to generate a feasible solutions for the problem.en_US
