Development of a decision supporting system for the selection of plant location of a cement manufacturing company : an AHP approachen_US
This research focuses on the site selection of a new-dry-process cement factory by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach. Scientific decision is a foundation and beginning of everything. It is vital for success of business. A decision support system (DSS) is a computer-based information system that supports business or organizational decision-making activities. DSSs serve the management, operations, and planning levels of an organization and help to make decisions, which may be rapidly changing and not easily specified in advance. The AHP is a structured technique for organizing and analyzing complex decisions. It is highlighted and suggested to be used in site selection for many industries because of its characteristic in calculating the criterion which seems like unrelated. With China's rapid economic development, the role of cement in the national economy is becoming increasingly important. For cement manufacturing companies, one of the starting points to achieve high competitiveness in the market is the selection of the factory site. The methodologies in this research focus on the multi-criterion development in the AHP approach. The study starts with extensive observations of the cement industry in a macro-point of view. Then the questionnaire will be designed and developed with reference from the literature review and interview with experts from the industry. After that, AHP criteria will be identified to execute field survey and data collection. By the end of the AHP model development, a result in terms of best choice will be the deliverable. Moreover, with the weights of various criteria change, the results will be adjusted dynamically. The established model will be put into practice and the verification and implementation issues will be conducted through case studies. Hopefully, the contribution of this project could give some advice to the company on the plant site selection to enrich and to improve the theoretical system proposed by the company.en_US
