Abstract: As the Internet technology and applications are widely accepted, using the technology and targeting at the huge population of users are becoming a major task of all enterprises across the world. The ability and effectiveness of taking the Internet advantage in business operation is essential to companies in both developed and developing countries. Of course the companies of developed countries perform better, most often much better, than the companies of developing countries. The primary goal of the research reported in this thesis is to evaluate the current status of e-business applications of Mainland Chinese companies, compared with those of developed countries. We are particularly focus on two issues. The first is the degree of difference compared with leading international companies. The second is the difference between companies of different size, region, and main business. In this thesis, we discuss the need for such a study and review related work in the area. The research is the first, as far as we know, systematic study on the effectiveness of e-business applications by Mainland Chinese companies. We propose a method for the comparative study and carry out the evaluation and analysis. The results confirm many commonly understandings. More importantly, the research has some interesting findings. The method and process we proposed and used in the research can be applied, in principle, to many other industry sectors.
