dcterms.abstractPrior research on the effect of relationship capital on alliance performance does not explore in-depth how the three key elements of relationship capital information exchange, mutual trust, and reciprocal commitment may affect each other. It also tends to ignore the impact of environmental uncertainty on the influence of relationship capital on strategy alliance performance. This study is proposed to address both these gaps.This study suggests that information exchange is a focal construct in the process by which relationship capital is formed and affects the performance of a strategic alliance. It examines the influence of information exchange on the other two elements of relationship capital, namely mutual trust and reciprocal commitment. It further proposes that environmental uncertainty may moderate the influence of information exchange on mutual trust and reciprocal commitment as well as the influence of mutual trust and reciprocal commitment on the performance of strategic alliances.This study uses China as its empirical setting. Like many other emerging economics, organizational environment in China is characterized by its uncertainty. Further, this study attempts to focus on contractual join ventures, a key form of non-equity strategic alliance in China often overlooked by researchers.Analysis of 205 contractual joint ventures indicates that there is a positive direct effect of information exchange on alliance performance. It also indicates that there is a positive indirect effect of information exchange on alliance performance through mutual trust as well as through reciprocal commitment. However, while the findings reveal that the positive impact of mutual trust on alliance performance is reduced in an environment of high uncertainty, in contrast, a better performance is found in an environment of high uncertainty when reciprocal commitment is in force.en_US
