Comparison of advanced modulaiton format for high capacity short reach optical transmission systemen_US
Intensity Modulation with Direct Detection (IM/DD) employing advanced modulation format which can provide high capacity, low cost and single configurations has recently been researched in short reach optical transmission system. The most common High Order Modulation (HOM) includes Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM), Carrier-less Amplitude Modulation (CAP) and Discrete Multi-tone Modulation (DMT). In this dissertation, we present a general comparison of these three formats in 112Gb/s 1310nm IM/DD optical transmission system and mainly focus on the system performance of various modulation orders both with the roll off factors of pulse shaping filter in PAM and CAP. As for DMT, the different subcarrier numbers are considered and compared. Adaptive Decision Feed-back Equalizer (DFE) with Least Mean Square (LMS algorithm) is applied in both PAM and CAP in order to achieve the simple configurations. Similarly, one-tap equalizer in frequency domain is applied in DMT. The system performance of three advanced formats is evaluated in terms of transmission distance and receiver sensitivity. Secondly, linear adaptive Feed foreword equalizer (FFE) and DFE with LMS algorithm are applied in 112Gb/s lSSOnm IM/DD optical transmission system in order to mitigate the chromatic dispersion with 17ps/nm/km group velocity and 0.0075ps/nm2/km third-order dispersion. They are been compared by evaluating their applicability for various fiber length with different number of taps. We first give a comprehensive comparison between PAM, CAP and DMT in a very fair condition based on different modulation order and roll off factors in 1310nm IM/DD system. Furthermore we first give the optimal taps number of adaptive FFE and DFE to eliminate the chromatic dispersion in 1550nm IM/DD system for reference.en_US
