Abstract: In this thesis, a thorough review on digital money is attempted. First, investigations on various inherent problems with digital money and studies on various existing digital payment / money systems are carried out. Based on the analyzed result, a digital money system, 'SmartMoney', is proposed to address the issues identified in the literature research in order to solve some of the problems with the existing systems. Furthermore, the working protocol on 'SmartMoney' is discussed and a demonstration on how SmartMoney works, using HTML and JavaScript, is presented. The author envisages this thesis to be a solid foundation on digital money and further research work can be built upon using this as reference.
