dcterms.abstractReading and spelling the English words correctly have been one of the major concerns of young learners in Hong Kong. In fact, applying systematic phonics instruction in teaching literacy has been advocated by various education systems around the world. Although a large number of studies have been carried out in evaluating the effectiveness of various kinds of phonics teaching, few have been done in Hong Kong. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of applying synthetic phonics in developing lower primary school students{174} English literacy and explore ways to enhance its effectiveness. A class of Primary One students from a local school participated in the study. It was the school policy to implement synthetic phonics teaching in primary one English curriculum. After the first term, it was found that students progressed differently in word reading and spelling. Also, students' performance in reading test was generally higher than the spelling test. Hence, in this study, it attempted to investigate how students gained the most from the synthetic phonics programme and what learning activities achieved this purpose. Moreover, factors for varied performances of students were explored. Further, students with lower achievement were intervened with remedial measures. Finally, students underwent a post-test to examine the effectiveness of the remedial measures. The research found that synthetic phonics had significant effects on developing students' reading skill. The enhanced synthetic phonics programme also provided students with richer learning experiences and enjoyment. Thus, students' confidence and learning motivation were strengthened.en_US
