dc.title | Humor in the Hong Kong language classroom : students' perceptions | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The primary aim of this paper was to explore students' perceptions of teacher's humor in an intercultural classroom. Hong Kong is one of the most popular study destinations for international students; however, little research has focused on the use of humor in the intercultural academic context or students' ratings of its effect on learning. This study contributes to existing research by identifying and analyzing students' comments on their teachers' humors used in classes. Data were collected through questionnaires completed by 40 students studying in Hong Kong Polytechnic University followed by ten semi-structured interviews. Informed by Systemic Functional Linguistics from an Appraisal perspective, this research presents the lexico-grammatical choices used by the students when evaluating their teachers' humor to understand the motivations that triggered students' feelings. The findings show that humor greatly reduce students' difficulty in understanding abstract theories, but some students still expressed negative attitudes towards teachers humor contents and its frequency. | en_US |
