| dcterms.abstract | This research reveals the implication of English language learning under a pedagogic setting to the college students majored in Medicine in order to explore the possible orientation of College English Course for non-English majors. It examines the influence in college students' competence of English language due to the absence of English course during their junior and senior years. The subjects in this research have a continuance in English course since their primary school until the sophomore year of their college studies; however, they encounter an absence of English course during their junior and senior years. Most of the subjects will have to pick up English learning after the absence because of various reasons, such as, needs in their professions, further education and so on. Thus in the research, three objectives with related hypotheses are generally raised: 1) To examine the necessity in the persistence of guided instruction (College English Course) throughout tertiary level (arisen from two hypotheses with respect to theory of Information Processing and correlation of memory and practice); 2) To examine whether the guided instruction (College English Course) can serve as motivation to students in English language learning (arisen from the hypothesis that there is correlation between motivation and classroom setting for language learning); 3) To identify the orientation of College English Course for non-English majors in future, which is the final and most significant objective of the research). The research was conducted with a mix-mode approach to achieve the three objectives. A survey of two questionnaires (with some questions overlapped) was designed according to different groups of subjects, thus the analysis would be able to specify the differences and aim at the target questions from different perspectives. The research also involves a pre-and-post tests designed for a group of senior students to evaluate their English competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking before and after the absence of College English Course. | en_US |
