dcterms.abstract | This project uses a Xilinx's Virtex-4 ML402 board as the core hardware platform and VHDL as the language of design. FPGA (field-programmable gate array) is an integrated circuit design that allows designers to quickly develop and prototype their HW designs. VHDL (Very-High-Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language) is a popular and wieldy language for the design of FPGAs. The main objective of the project is to visualize sound by displaying it graphically on a monitor as waveform. The same has also been implemented on a LCD. Sound is input through a microphone connected to the FPGA board used in this thesis and converted into digital format by the LM4550 AC'97 Audio Codec. Then LM4550 utilizes internal A/D converting circuit to sample the sound through PCM (Pulse Code Modulation). The converted quantized data are read by the FPGA to be processed. Depending on the value of the sampled data, a waveform is reconstructed on the FPGA board LCD module through its VGA (Video Graphics Array) interface at a monitor attached to the FPGA board. The FPGA board's switched control how the sound wave should be displayed. Three different options have been implemented: A single red square moving horizontally on the screen and can be controlled regularly by speaking, a histogram (equalizer) and a sinusoidal waveform. | en_US |
