dc.title | Autonomous FPGA-based gaming console | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | HDL (hardware description language) and FPGA (field-programmable gate array) devices allow designers to quickly develop and implement sophisticated digital circuits and prototype these it on reconfigurable computing boards. As these technologies mature, they have become mainstream practice. This dissertation describes the implementation of an autonomous FPGA-based gaming console which implements a ping pong game. The core hardware platform used in the project is a Xilinx's Virtex-4 ML402 board. A mixture of top-down and bottom-up approach is flowed for the design and implementation on an FPGA using the Xilinx ISE Design Suite as the main development platform. The console system uses a VGA Monitor and a LCD1602 as output, and a PS/2 keyboard, DIP switches and buttons as inputs. This gaming console allows single player mode as well as two player mode ping pong game. Some of the main objectives of the project are the understanding of HDL (in particular VHDL), FPGA design and verification flow, as well as how to tackle larger systems using hierarchical design strategies, e.g. the use of state machine as overall controller. | en_US |
